For the first time in his racing career, Caleb Campbell will race in Canada when the Formula 4 United States Championship arrives this weekend. With more than 40 friends and family members set to attend, Campbell is excited for the chance to perform at home.

“I’m super excited for it,” Campbell said. “I’m used to racing in the States where sometimes one of my friends or maybe a family member will come, but I’ve never had a whole crowd of people supporting me before. It means a lot.”

Despite the bigger audience, Campbell insists he’s keeping the same mindset.

“To me, it’s still another race. I’m going to handle it the same,” he explained. “If anything, having all these people behind me cheering me on will push me through the weekend.”

Q&A

Q: What’s the biggest thing you’re looking forward to this weekend?

A: “Biggest thing I’m looking forward to is just the track in general, being in Canada, having friends and family there. Showing my track family my home country, and home family my track life… I’m just super excited for that, there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Q: As a rookie, what’s been your biggest learning curve this season?

A: “Probably just learning the car. I wasn’t planning on doing the Formula 4 United States Championship at first—I was going to do another junior series—but then I got the opportunity to drive an F4 car and we decided to go for it. This is the first year where it’s been really professional, racing against drivers who’ve been doing this for a while, so that’s been the biggest adjustment.”

Q: What’s it been like competing against such a strong field?

A: “These drivers have been in karting and racing for years, and they’re all really good. We’ve had some tough battles. It’s been a good learning experience. This sport is about shaving off tenths of seconds, it’s about pursuit of perfection and every little detail matters.”

Q: Which race has been the most memorable so far?

A: “Road America was one of my favourites. But also Mid-Ohio, where I set the fastest lap of the race—and I think I set the track record there too. It showed I have the speed, I just need some good luck to put it all together.”

Q: Any surprises or challenges you didn’t expect?

A: “Honestly, I didn’t expect to be struggling as much as I am. I know I have the pace, I’ve shown everyone I’m fast. It’s just working on the little details to be a step ahead of the rest.”

Q: What are the main challenges you face on track?

A: “It’s the little setbacks you can’t control. Like if someone turns into you and you get pushed wide, your tires are dirty and you have to clean them off, then refocus. It’s easy to get frustrated and start making mistakes, so the challenge is keeping your head in it.”

Q: How do you stay focused before and during a race?

A: “Before I hop in the car I like to jump rope—it gets my heart rate up and gets me going. I also spend about 30 minutes on the simulator before going on track to warm up. Once I’m in the car there’s so much to focus on—braking points, turn-in, apex, acceleration—that I don’t really have time to think about anything else.”

Q: What goals have you set for the rest of the season?

A: “My goal is still to win the championship. I’m a few points behind, but hopefully I can catch up in the next few rounds. A podium finish in the overall championship—top three—would be a successful rookie season for me.”

Q: Any message you’d like to share ahead of your Canadian debut?

A: “Just thank you to everyone who’s coming out. I’m super excited to see everyone on Saturday, and I’m grateful for all the support from my family, friends, and partners—Kids Help Phone, Cosmos, and Victus. It means a lot.”
